Make Your Computer Say Your Name on Startup

You have heard that when your Xp, Vista, or Win 7 computer plays a sound when the computer is turned on. Now what if we are going to modify the sound that will play something like "Good Day Adam, how are you?" upon starting up the computer? Will it be nice if you play a sound recording or a narrated text when your computer starts? That is absolutely cool right? This is no trick and will not do harm in your computer as we are only going to put a program in the startup folder of your operating system. And if you wish to remove it, you can just delete the file anytime. So here is the procedure.

Play Custom Sound On Startup

Making a Custom Sound on Computer Startup

a. Open notepad and paste in the following code (choose only one of the codes)

for narrated voice copy :

Dim speaks, speech
speaks="Welcome, Please wait for a moment to prepare your computer"
Set speech=CreateObject("sapi.spvoice")
speech.Speak speaks

for a recorded wave sound copy :

strSoundFile = "C:\windows\Media\Notify.wav"
Set objShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
strCommand = "sndrec32 /play /close " & strSoundFile
objShell.Run strCommand, 0, False

(test if your script plays the sound by clicking it)

b. Save the copied file as "chstutorial.vbs" where chstutorial can be replaced with any name you like and also maintain the quotations in saving the file.

NOTE : If you used the recorded wave sound file, make sure that the you put your wave file to the target directory ex: "C:\windows\media\my sound.wav" where my sound.wav is your customized sound file.

c. Now you have your visual basic scripts ready, copy that file to to the startup folder. Below are listed where the startup folder should be found in the default installation of your operating system.

for Win Xp, navigate to :
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

for Win Vista and Win 7, navigate to
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

d. Disable your default startup sound by going to the "Control Panel", "Sounds and Audio Devices", "Sounds Tab", in the Program Events find "Windows Startup", under Sounds option, choose under drop down option "No Sound". Alternately, you can also just look for the wave file you wish to play on startup even without using the VBS script above. This is simple but now you know you have options which to take. :-)

By the way, the sound will of course only play upon startup.

Autoplay Favorite Sound on Clicking your USB Flashdrive | Thumbdrive

Do you ever wish to have your favorite mp3 play as you click on the icon of your USB Flashdrive? Yes at last! As I tried "googling" for quite some time I wasn't able to find one tutorial on the net how to autoplay sound upon clicking your flashdrive icon. Now I made one! It might not be perfect but it works on XP. It works by creating 2 files : the autorun.inf file and a batch file. See how I made it.

autoplay sound on USB Flashdrive
click to enlarge

The Batch File

1. Open notepad by pressing Win+R then type in "notepad" in the box (no quotations)

2. In your notepad, copy the following code:

--- Start Copy

@ECHO OFF
start /MIN ding.wav
exit

--- Stop Copy

"ding.wav" is the name of the sound file which you want to play upon clicking on your flashdrive. You may replace it with something like "solo.mp3" or "smooth.mp3" or even your voice recording in wave format. The sound file that you wish to play with autorun should be saved in the root directory of your USB Flashdrive.

3. Save the file as "ding.bat" (with quotations) or "my sound.bat" as long as the .bat extension and the quotations remain upon saving. Save this file in the root directory of your flashdrive.

The Autorun.inf File

1. Open notepad again.

2. Copy the following code:

--- Start Copy

[autorun]
open=ding.bat
action=Run This Ding Program
shell\open\command=ding.bat
label=drokz

--- Stop Copy

"ding.bat" is the name of your batch file
"drokz" is the name of your flashdrive which you can replace of course.

3. Save this file as "autorun.inf" (with quotations) in the root directory of your USB flashdrive.

4. Also save the sound file that you wish to include in your autorun file.

5. Enjoy!

Do comment about this very cool USB Flashdrive sound autoplay trick!!

How to Set System Restore in XP

Setting System Restore should be practiced before making any changes in your computer specially if you're dealing with the registry. What is needed in System Restore is the a little space of your hard drive (which by the way you can adjust the size by going to system properties, then to the System Restore Tab) and choosing a Restoration Point. So, here it is done.

1. Go to "Run" and type : %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

2. The restore dialogue box appears and it will ask you what task will you perform. You should choose "Create Restoration Point".

3. Then you are asked to write a restoration name. You can just write anything like "Before changing the registry" or something like that. Then click the button "Create". Wait for a minute or so then you're done!

4. So if ever you made something like editing the registry or installing a game or other software and made your system to crash, then you can just revert by rolling back the action using System Restore. To do so, open System Restore ( Go to "Run", type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe) and as the System Restore dialog box appears choose "Restore my computer at an earlier time". Just follow the instructions then.

Preventing Programs to Run on Startup

We usually prevent programs to run at startup using the msconfig (go to "run" then type msconfig). We can also prevent some programs to run at startup using the Registry Editor. Before editing the registry, be sure to have it backed up and have set system restore. Here's how we prevent programs to run at startup.

1. Navigate to : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

2. At the right pane, you will see listed programs that run at startup. You can remove a program or programs by simply clicking right on the program string value and choose delete.

3. Close the Registry Editor and reboot your computer.

Turning On or Off XP's Removable Drive Autorun

Autoruns are used by virus coders to launch their virus via removable drives. Upon inserting our thumbdrive, the autorun program kicks in automatically run any program with an autorun attribute. To be able to disable the autorun feature of the programs temporarily, we can hold down the "Shift" key then plug in your thumbdrive until it will be identified and loaded in to your system.

But if you want to permanently disable autoruns, follow the steps below:

1. We are going to have some registry edits. So please be careful in doing so because sometimes the effects are irreversible.

2.Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ Explorer\ "NoDrivePathAutorun"

3. Click twice on the "NoDrivePathAutorun" and you should see the default string value of 95 0 0 0, just change the first value 95 to 91.

4. Restart your computer.

Blocking Websites using Hosts File in Vista or Xp

Do you like to restrict your friends or a brother or sister access certain websites? You may not have to use third party programs to do the job. Whatever reasons you have to block a site or websites, I'm glad to share this tut I have learned from others. Share this tut as well or refer this blog to others. If you have another way to block a site, please do share it to us.

Blocking Websites using Hosts File in Vista or Xp

1. Let us assume we are going to block our blogsite http://www.clhidohardware.blogspot.com from any web browser you have. If we are to block a specific site, we must indicate the possible urls a user might write on the address bar like clhidohardware.com, http://clhidohardware.blogspot.com, wwww.clhidohardware.blogspot.com. These possible urls must be screened or filtered from the Hosts File.

2. Go to "Run" and type in "cmd". And in the command prompt type this in without quotes net user administrator /active:yes . This will give you administrative rights to be able to do the tweaks.

3. Go to "Run" from the Start button and type in "Drivers" ( without the quotes )

4. As the Drivers window pops out, go to folder "etc".

5. Inside folder "etc", open file "Hosts"

6. Open file Hosts with notepad.

7. Do you see "127.0.0.1 localhost", add up below it like:

127.0.0.1 www.clhidohardware.blogspot.com
127.0.0.1 http://clhidohardware.blogspot.com
127.0.0.1 clhidohardware.blogspot.com

8. Save the file. Try opening a browser and type in either of the three urls to test if it screens the address. If it opens, then it hasn't able to block the urls you entered in the Hosts file. Try using 0.0.0.0 instead of 127.0.0.1 in the Hosts file.

Hope you successfully screened off the sites you wish to block. :-)

Change and Replace the "Start" Button Text with your name

( Tested on WIN XP -= Use trick at your own risk! =- )

Have you ever wanted to to change the word "Start" in the Start Button of Win XP but could not figure out how? Changing it is so easy, you dont have to be a geek to do so. All you need to have is a program called Resource Hacker and a brain to follow some instruction. Sounds easy right?

What we are going to do is to change the text which happens to be "Start" of the start button. We can only do this so if we alter the text of the explorer shell ( explorer.exe ) with the help of ResHack ( Resource Hacker ). Then after doing so, we need to change the string value of the Shell by typing in the name of the edited explorer.exe file. Lets get started!

A. Download the Resource Hacker Program and save it on your desktop.

B. After successfully downloaded ResHack, we will navigate to the system32 folder of the Windows Directory. We can easily access the directory by opening "Run" and type in "%systemroot%" without the quotes. It should display something like c:\WINDOWS or D:\WINDOWS but by default the root is C:. Once you are at the WINDOWS directory, look for the file named "explorer.exe" and create a backup of it and save it on your desktop.

C. Now, we need to terminate explorer.exe by ending its process at the Task Manager. Click right on the taskbar and then t "Task Manager". Alternately, you may use key combinations as CTRL+SHIFT+ESC. Go then to the "Processes" Tab and look for explorer.exe. Once explorer.exe is found, click right on it and choose "End Process Tree"

D. We now need to open Resource Hacker. Go to "Applications" Tab, then to "New Task" which is situated at the lower right portion of the window. Once clicked, you will see a "Create new task" window. Noticeably, a "Browse" button should be clicked and navigate to your desktop and click on ResHack to open it.

E. Editing of Explorer.exe will now be possible using Resource Hacker. To do so, just go to "File", then "Open" and locate the Explorer.exe file in the C:\WINDOWS or the WINDOWS Directory of another partition.

F. In the left Panel of the Resource Hacker, navigate to "String Table". Inside "String Table", go to Folder 37 then click on 1033. On the right pane, double click on the word START of line 578 and once START is highlighted type in any word you wish to replace it like Clhido. Then Click on the "Compile Script" button then go to "File" and click on "Save as" to save the edit as "testing". Exit

G. Again, go to "Task Manager" and open "New Task" then type in "regedit" ( without quotes ).

H. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon then double click on the "Shell" String Value and replace "Explorer.exe" to "testing.exe" then click ok.

I. Log Off or Restart Computer

J. Comment or link this blog to help share the trick. :-)

Changing Windows Properties Logo

Sometimes, you want to make some personal touches on your Windows System Properties Box with a big label of your name. Luckily windows grants us to make these changes by simple creation of the logo and some ini file for additional info about the label. I got this great tweak from the windows help central page and laid out things very easy for to follow. So here it is.

A. First you need to create two things, your bmp logo and the info. Your logo should have a size of 180 x 120 pixels (180 for width and 120 for height ) and save it as a bmp (bitmap). You can make out a logo plainly from mspaint. ;-) Then, save your logo as oemlogo.bmp

B. Now having a 180 x 120 bmp logo, make an oem info by copying the text below. Do edits on the text below to suit your personal touches. Open notepad ( press win+r then type notepad ) then copy below

=== start copy below ===

[General]
Manufacturer=Windows Help Central
Model=ShowCase

[Support Information]
Line1=" "
Line2=" For tricks and other help:"
Line3=""
Line4=" This part will change the info wgich is customizable"
Line5=" Windows XP Tips by clhidohardware "
Line6=" You may add something here..."
Line7=""
Line8=" write your email here.."
Line9=" or your number maybe...."
Line10=""
Line11=""
Line12=" http://www.clhidohardware.com/"

=== stop copy ===

Save this file as "oeminfo.ini" (weird but please include the quotations") and choose "all" in the file type. You can find the contents of your ini file if the Support Information button is clicked.

C. Now having the two files, copy both the oeminfo.ini and oemlogo.bmp files.

D. Press Win+R and in the "open" box, type in system32

E. As the System32 window opens, paste in the files.

F. Log off

G. Log back in. Go to your start menu and click right on "My Computer" and choose "properties". You should see your logo and info by now. :-)

Please do comment. :-) Suggest a Tip or ask a question likewise to help us answer your needs.
